Picture this. You find the perfect person for the missing gap in your team, but you decide to keep looking – ‘just in case’. Then, that perfect employee finds something else and you miss out, so you have to start the hiring process all over again. Unfortunately, that scenario is very common. In fact, the team here at Velocity has experiences this all too often!

Our clients often call us to say, “We really love the candidate; let’s move to the final stages…but we would also like to see what else is out there”. Choice is good, but it’s important to remember that the risk of losing the person is a real one. Not only could you miss out on the perfect hire, as soon as there’s a delay people might start to question the running of your organisation too, thinking, “Is this how they make business decisions?”. At which point, your perfect employee could be long gone, having already accepted one of the five other offers they now have on the table. Your offer is no longer in the ball park.

Strong employees are hard to find. In fact, many organisations are now throwing money at good employees to make them stay (that’s a whole other story I’ll save for another day). If you like someone and want them to be a part of your team and not your competitor’s, go with your gut and HIRE them! It’s that simple.
